A quick one for today, but Susanna Hoffs‘s take on the seminal Stones classic “Under My Thumb” is pretty goshdarn captivating.

Hoffs’s new covers album The Deep End drops on April 7th, 2023, and herein lies the first preview of what’s to come. If “Thumb” is any indication, I am so already there for it.

Loving the feel of this interpretation. What makes it so appealing to my ears isn’t so much the gender swap, which certainly lends a hip-swaggering female sass you’ll never find in the original. Nope, it’s the tasteful string section, the playful vibes, and the Neo-60s-Motown-meets-Kensington-girl-group aesthetic Hoffs brings to the table.

I’ve already got the sucker pre-ordered. If you’ve ever heard Hoffs’s collaboration with Matthew Sweet in the 3-volume Under The Covers collection, you’re well aware of how much creative melodic energy she brings to seemingly old, tired songs. She makes them sound fresh and revigorated, discovering new musical nuances while reminding you what made the originals so good in the first place.

So give this one a listen and enjoy. And if you’re so inclined, get your pre-order in! (We don’t do Amazon Affiliates or any of that nonsense, you know where to go.)
