Slade, man.

Where glam rock, hard rock, toybox rock, and power pop collide, you’ll find Slade. In abundance.

They never really made a dent here in the States, but in the UK these guys were so undeniably massive it hardly abides the telling. Except that it utterly does. So here we are with Slade and their 1973 #1 smash Merry Xmas Everybody.

This song is pure holiday uplift. No theatrics, no bombast, just a confident midtempo groove that settles in with a smile. From the first strummed chords you can feel the band creating a warm and steady foundation, something bright and inviting that feels made for friends, fireplaces, cheer, and one more round poured at the local pub. The vibe is cheerful, melodic, and wonderfully human.

And then there is Noddy Holder, whose voice might be one of the great winter instruments of rock. He has that perfect mix of grit and warmth, full of character but never cartoonish. When he reaches for the big refrain you hear both power and kindness in the same breath. He does not shout you into the chorus so much as welcome you into it. Entire pubs lean forward, not to scream, but to sing along as a single happy crowd.

Oh did I say “no theatrics, no bombast”? I lied. That epic “IT’S CHRISTMAS!!!!” gehshreit during the outro is utterly monumental. And on brand.

And yet underneath all the stomp and glam there’s some real craftsmanship here. The melodies (from bassist Jim Lea and Holder) glide with real musical contour. Throughout the song, there’s a steady bounce and sparkle and just enough pub singalong warmth. Everything is big, yes, but nothing is sloppy.

What makes Merry Xmas Everybody endure is its melodic sincerity. Nothing here is wistful, solemn, or trying to be more clever than it is. I would liken it to the sound of an entire town clocking off work, pouring a drink, pulling on a paper crown, and deciding as a collective that tonight is for joy and nothing else.
